Chronology:
In 1841 at the time of son Thomas' birth at 18 Dock St, Rosemary Lane, Whitechapel he was described as a Carman. The 1841 census also records him as a Carman of Dock Street where he was living with wife and family.
Another couple, Thomas and Lydia (Freeman?) both 50 also seem to share the address as does a Thomas (Freeman?), 15. Both Thomas' are Carmen. The surname is not clear and it is just possible that they are the parents and brother of James' wife Ann Jane whose surname is given as Furnis on Thomas' birth certificate. Another possibility is that the older Thomas was James' employer. Whatever the relationship, it seems the families were close with the Roberts' naming a daughter Lydia in 1839 and a son Thomas in 1841. It is worth noting that I couldn't find Thomas and Lydia in 1851 and that there are a Thomas and Lydia Jane Freeman registered as dying in 1848 in Stepney. 2
James married Ann Jane Furnis(?) about 1832. (Ann Jane Furnis(?) was born Cal 1810 in Middlesex, St Georges (in the East?) 3 and died after 1851.)
